Stephen White

Civil and Commercial Mediator

Practice Overview

Stephen’s ability to gain the confidence of the parties to a dispute and to maintain a balanced, common sense approach to the process enables him to be a successful mediator.  He qualified as a mediator in January 2006 since when he has undertaken a number of mediations relating to both commercial and property disputes.  The experience which Stephen gained as a partner in a large regional law firm for thirty years (including twelve years in key managerial positions) and in his current role as a consultant for one of the UK’s largest discretionary investment management firms, has equipped him with the skills required to mediate very effectively.

Professional Background

As a graduate of University College London, Stephen subsequently spent his entire career from trainee to partner with a large regional law firm and was involved in all aspects of commercial property.

He was the firm’s first Managing Partner from 1990 to 1996 and the Senior Partner from 1999 to 2005.

  • "Stephen brought to bear his qualities as a Mediator in promptly identifying the essence of a protracted dispute, locating the areas of common ground and facilitating an agreement that contained much greater flexibility than the limitations of a court-imposed solution. Both parties were pleased with the result which practically resolved years of acrimony. We would not hesitate to endorse his appointment as Mediator".

  • “Mr White identified the issues quickly and was able to produce a creative solution to a bitter dispute that seemed irresolvable prior to his input and skilled guidance

Other Experience

Following Stephen’s retirement in 2007, he joined the investment management firm Quilter Cheviot as a consultant with the specific role of enhancing and developing the firm’s relationships with the professional community. Stephen was based in the Manchester office of Quilter Cheviot for six years. Following his move to London, Stephen joined the head office of the firm in early 2014 where he is fulfilling a similar role.

Stephen was Chairman of pro.manchester – an organisation representing the interests of member firms in the financial and professional sector – from 2006 to 2007.  He served as Chairman of the board of trustees of Disabled Living, one of the oldest charities in Manchester, from 2006 to 2013. He has recently completed a nine year term as an independent member of the Audit Committee of AQA.
